"Free Makeup Is a Bad Thing" - Said No One Ever

Hey pretty guys and gals! Today, I thought I'd share with you a few ways I use to get free makeup. (These of course, are not all the ways to get freebies). All of the items in this post were received during the month of August and were free!
**Warning, there are alot of pictures and links in this post!**

All my freebies!

So I guess I'll start off with one I think most people know about: Sehpora Beauty Insider.
One of this years' birthday choices from Sephora: Nars lippies!
Nars lip pencils in Cruella (red) and Rikugein (pink) (with flash)
For those of you that don't know, Sephora has a rewards program and if you sign up for it, you get a choice between two samples each birthday you have while you're a member. You can redeem your birthday gift at any time during the month of your birthday by either going to their stores and showing them your card (this way is completely free) or you can add it to an online order. Another way to receive samples from Sephora is to make an online order and use your Beauty Insider Points (collected by making purchases) and/or to just select 3 free samples before checking out online (you can do both in the same order).

My birthday was in August, so I was eligible to redeem my birthday gift. They offered Nars lippies and some kind of skin care sample set - I can't remember what brand it was, but there was a cucumber mask and some kind of eye cream or gel in it. I picked the Nars, since I'm set on skincare and I've never tried Nars before. I like the colors, Cruella - a nice red and Rikugein - a neutral pink.

The second way to get freebies, is to use My Coke Rewards!
Lipmatic Lipgloss in Cotton Candy Lane (with flash)
I've been a My Coke Rewards member for a long time, and they're a great way to get freebies - I've gotten magazines, GameStop eGift cards and now a lipgloss! Unfortunately, I don't believe this particular reward is available anymore. But it was 500 points and My Coke Rewards e-mailed me a Promo Code that covered the cost of the lipgloss and the shipping (Lipmatic did NOT require a credit card since the total cost was covered).

This lipgloss is from Lipmatic by Destiny Jones. I don't know anything about the brand, but I'm really excited to try this out! This shade kinda reminds me of MAC's "Mall Madness" lipgloss released with their Betty and Veronica collection a few years back.

The third way to get freebies is through MAC cosmetics with Back to MAC!
MAC lipstick in Heroine (with flash)

I think most people know about this one, but for those that don't know, Back to MAC is a way to get free lipsticks. All you do, is take 6 empty MAC containers (must be plastic or glass) back to your local MAC - there's also an online form where you can mail your empties to MAC - and then you pick out what lipstick you want! The only lipsticks you can't get this way are the Viva Glam lipsticks (since those are for their AIDS fundraising campaign) and any special collaborations.

So for my freebie, I picked Heroine. I thought it would be perfect for fall and I love my purples!

A sidenote: I didn't realize this when I got these, but don't these colors look like they'd go good together? ;)

And finally, the last way to get free products is through Mary Kay.
*This method depends on your Beauty Consultant*

The first thing you need to do is find a Mary Kay Beauty Consultant and attend a facial party. Usually at their parties, you try out one of their skincare lines and sample a few makeup items. If you like the colors you tried during the party, you can ask your Consultant for samples. Sometimes, they'll play a game during the party to see who can get their makeup on the quickest - the winner usually gets a sample. And finally, sometimes they ask questions during the party and if you answer their questions correctly, you'll get a sample.

At the party I attended, I won an eyeshadow in 'Raisin', an eyeshadow in 'Sienna' and a Satin Hands handcream sample (not shown).
After the party, I asked my Beauty Consultant for samples used in the party and she gave me an eyeshadow in 'Iris', an eyeshadow in 'Gold Coast' and a blush in 'Shy Blush'

My Beauty Consultant didn't have a couple items I wanted samples for, so she surprised me with a couple free full sized products - the Indulge Soothing Eye Gel and a Creme Lipstick in Raisinberry. I offered to pay her for them but she said no! She is officially my favorite Mary Kay Beauty Consultant ever! :)

My Top 3 Makeup Picks for This Week!

Hey pretty guys and gals! Long time, no see! I'm going to make an effort to blog regularly as well as keep to my Youtube schedule! ;)

I thought I'd start posting my current top three beauty items weekly here on my blog! Now, I know what you're thinking - "Luna, you already (normally) post pictures of what products you use on Instagram, why write a blog post about it?" Well, one of the things I don't get to do on Instagram is explain WHY I like a specific product so much. One could argue I could just make a Youtube video every week on this topic, but by the time we got to the end of the month, there'd be no point in making a favorites video! That being said, without further ado - I give to you my top three beauty items for this week! :)

1. Hard Candy Fox In a Box Blush in 'Sweet & Spicy'

Outer Packaging
So, this product isn't a newbie in my makeup collection and I've talked about it plenty of times before, but I keep finding myself reaching for it this week (and this month for that matter). I don't like wearing bronzers in the winter time, so when spring comes around and it starts getting hot, I start wearing my bronzers again, but I ease myself into them. (Later in the summer, I'll be transitioning into my Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush/Bronzer but it's a little dark for me to wear at the moment!) This blush/bronzer is a perfect one for those with lighter skin tones or for those not wanting a deep bronze, creating a beautiful peachy color! It adds a lovely pop of color and glow, without going over the top! (Retails for $6 - Walmart.com)

It even comes with a little brush!
Swatch!

2. CoverGirl AquaSmooth Foundation in "Classic Ivory"

CoverGirl AquaSmooth Outer Packaging
I started off the month using Mary Kay's CC Cream, but in the last couple weeks I started using this wonderful foundation. It blends in nicely, dries quickly, has a matte finish, doesn't make my skin oily (I have combination skin), has about the same consistency on the skin as a BB/CC cream and as an added bonus has SPF 20. Since I started wearing this foundation, paired with the Hard Candy blush featured above - I've gotten lots of compliments about how good my makeup looks in regards to my skin tone. Considering it is a creamy foundation and I live in a hot and humid climate - I still recommend giving it a shot - In my opinion, it does a great job of staying in place! (Retails for $10.99 - CVS.com

Inner Packaging - Ignore the messy sponge! ;)

3. Be a Bombshell Eyeliner in 'Expresso'

Outer Packaging
I've not talked about this item since I received it in a Boxycharm box awhile back. I've been obsessed with brown eyeliners lately, was digging through my makeup collection for some and found this. I fell in love with it immediately! It's your typical felt tip liner and creates great lines of all sizes - but what made me really fall for this liner in particular, is its color. I've tried other brown felt tip liners before, but they've been a tad dark for my taste. Of course, you could also say "Well, you could always use pencils or gels" and I could, but felt tip liners are my go-to in the summer, because they dry much quicker than pencils, they don't smudge and they don't sweat off in the heat and humidity! I highly recommend this liner to anyone looking for a good felt tip liner - I've only tried this color but I can only assume the other colors Be a Bombshell carries are just as rich! (Retails for $14 - beabombshellcosmetics.com)
Swatch!

Cystic Fibrosis - What Is It and How It Affected My Family

Hey pretty guys and gals! First off, I want to say I'm sorry for not posting on here in forever! If you follow me on Youtube, you know it's been hectic in my household. But for those that don't follow me, here goes: I was let go from my job, my Endometriosis has been acting up, a couple of people in my life have passed away and there was some drama with my brother. But everything's getting back to normal, I promise!

So today's topic is Cystic Fibrosis. What is it? Here's an article that was written for this blog:
Thanks Maggie at Healthline Networks for putting everything together!
PS: Below the article is how Cystic Fibrosis affected my family!

---------------------------------------------

Causes and Treatments of Cystic Fibrosis

Even though approximately 30,000 people in the U.S. have cystic fibrosis (CF), many people know little to nothing about this serious genetic disease.

What Is CF?

CF is a life-threatening disease that affects mostly the lungs and digestive system because of an inherited defective gene. We all have cells that produce lubricants such as sweat, digestive fluids, and mucus that’s usually thin and slippery. In someone with cystic fibrosis, those secretions are extra thick and instead of lubricating as they should, they clog up important passageways and ducts in the body, mainly in the lungs and pancreas. This makes breathing difficult, increases the risk of infection and inflammation in the lungs and can cause permanent damage and even respiratory failure. As for the pancreas; CF interferes with the breakdown of food and absorption of nutrients, leading to malnutrition and several other issues that result from not getting the right nutrients.

How People Get CF

Since it’s a genetic disease, most people inherit it from their parents in the same way that one inherits other characteristics from their parents, like eye and hair color. To get CF, you need to inherit two copies of this defective gene; one from each parent. If you only inherit one copy of the gene then you don’t have CF but are a carrier and can pass it off to your children. There are an astonishing 1,800 known mutations of the CF gene, with some being more common than others.

Treating CF

Sadly, there’s not yet a cure for the disease—only treatments to help with symptoms and to lower the risk of complications. The best way to treat CF is to start monitoring and treating the condition early and aggressively to try to prevent lung infections by removing or loosening the muscus in the lungs and working to prevent or treat any intestinal blockages. A big part of treatment is also getting the right nutrition.
Some of the things used to treat CF include medications like antibiotics, inhalers, and mucus-thinners. Supplements are also used to improve nutrition. Exercise and special breathing techniques are an important part of treatment to because they can improve lung function. Other treatment options include:
Chest physical therapy using special techniques and devices that help loosen mucus. In severe cases a feeding or breathing tube might be needed and even surgery such as a lung transplant.

Lifestyle Changes

There are some things that a person with CF can do at home to help keep their CF symptoms under control. Staying on top of nutrition is a must since people with CF can need as many as 50 percent more calories than the average person. Enzyme supplements, high-calorie foods supplements, and extra fiber are just some ways to improve nutrition with CF. Water and other fluids are also important, not only for hydration, but also because it can thin the mucus in the lungs.
Exercise, though not always easy, goes a long way in improving heart and lung function people with CF, even if just walking.
Finally, avoiding smoke and washing hands regularly to help minimize the risk of infection are also things that can be done to help with CF.

Cystic Fibrosis in my Family

I haven't talked about this in the past, but Cystic Fibrosis is a disease that runs in my father's family. We lost a cousin of mine to it, and he was only 16! And then of course, I have to talk about my Grandmother, as she had it too. Before you say 'That's not possible!' I'm gonna say, 'I don't how she lived that long with it, but she did.' She wasn't diagnosed until she was in her 30's, if I'm not mistaken, but according to relatives, she'd been sick her whole life. She seemed like she always had Pneumonia around Christmas and often spent the holiday in the hospital. The medical universities always wanted her for testing and studies, even though she knew the research may help someone someday, she hated that so much, it was more time she had to spend away from her family. She also would up with Colon Cancer and managed to kick its butt. A few years later, she developed some scar tissue from her Colon Cancer and after some complications and spending a lot of time in the hospital, she passed away at age 55. Just before she died, she made my father and my aunt promise that before us kids decided to have children of our own, we'd see a genetic counselor and get tested to see if we're carriers. I was only 4 1/2 when she passed away, so I don't remember her well, but she did teach me something: Fight no matter what.
My parents and I weren't there in the hospital with her when she passed, but the story goes that the doctors had been preparing to pass away for awhile. They'd been giving her periodical doses of morphine and slightly increasing the doses as time passed, and they were going to take her off the ventilator (machine to help people breathe). Well, when they did, she managed to live another 12 hours, which apparently doesn't happen often.
I wish I could remember more of her, but my family tells me I've inherited alot of her behaviors, she had a great sense of style, was a wonderful hostess at her parties, loved antiques and had more expensive tastes, she wanted the best quality!

I hope that none of my readers have to face this in your families, but if you do, my heart goes out to you! <3

Until next time, pretty guys and gals!

Hello All!

Hey pretty guys and gals! Long time no see if you don't follow me on Youtube, Twitter, Facebook or Instagram! I sincerely apologize for not writing blogs the last couple months, the holiday season took over me :(

If you're interested in what exactly happened, here it is: I was hired at the Family Dollar in October and am currently being promoted to Assistant Manager in my home store but am working at a different store that requires an hour long commute daily for the time being due to training and a workman's compensation case going on at my training store + doing my Countdown to Christmas video series on Youtube (which was a fail in my opinion). And of course, how can we forget Christmas itself... I always get overwhelmed due to work, but this year for some reason I got a little depressed this Christmas. I wished that I could see my older brother, who doesn't celebrate Christmas due to his religion. And I also wished that I could've spent Christmas with my dearly departed grandparents who loved Christmas. I always have a thirst for family and tradition at Christmas, but this year it was stronger than ever before.

... Whoa, that got a little deep and personal! Sorry about that :(

I'm back just in time for New Year's and what does that mean you ask?

New Years Resolutions!

In regards to this blog, my only New Year's resolution is to write a minimum of two blog posts a week, starting January 1, 2014 - one of which will be a Nail Pick of the Week.

Other resolutions will be listed in my New Years Resolutions video going up in the next week!

Videos to look for in the next week:

*Get Ready With Me: Anniversary Edition (12/28/2013) *May go up on 12/29
*December 2013 Yays and Nays (Favorites video)
*December 2013 Empties Raves and Craves
*Favorite Beauty Products for 2013

I hope you all have a wonderful rest of your week and I'll see you all later! Much love to all my pretty guys and gals!
